Cedros Island sits about 60 miles off the Pacific coast of Baja California, roughly halfway down the peninsula. It is remote by design, and that is exactly why the fishing is so good. This guide covers the basics people search for before they plan a trip: where the island is, what the weather is like, how you get there, where you stay and what there is to do.
Where Is Cedros Island?
Cedros Island (Isla de Cedros in Spanish) is one of the largest islands off the Pacific coast of Baja California, Mexico. It lies in open Pacific water, around 60 miles from the mainland, and it became part of a Mexican Biosphere Reserve in 2016. Most guests reach the island by small commuter plane from Tijuana.
Because the island is far from the mainland and the water around it is deep and cold, it holds big fish that rarely see pressure: trophy yellowtail, calico bass and, in season, bluefin tuna.
Weather and Water Conditions by Season
Cedros Island has a dry, Pacific-influenced climate. Mornings can be cool and breezy, and the afternoon wind often picks up on the water, so plan to dress in layers. Conditions change by season and by day, and Toro’s captains read the water each morning to decide where the fish are.
- Late summer through fall: prime time for trophy yellowtail. See our fall yellowtail gear and tactics guide.
- Warm-water months: bluefin tuna can show up when the water warms. Read the Cedros Island tuna fishing guide.
- Year-round: calico bass fishing along the kelp edges. Details in our calico bass and yellowtail guide.

How to Get to Cedros Island
Most guests cross the border at the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) pedestrian bridge in Otay Mesa, which takes you from San Diego straight into Tijuana International Airport (TIJ). From TIJ you fly to the island’s airstrip on a small commuter plane, a flight of about two hours. On arrival, Toro’s team meets you and handles transport to the lodge.
The step-by-step version, with CBX costs and what to pack, is in our full guide: How to Get to Cedros Island.
Where to Stay on the Island
Guests stay at Toro’s lodge, which looks out over the ocean and has satellite WiFi. A stay is all-inclusive: lodging, chef-prepared meals, open bar and fishing. There is also an oceanview lounge, a billiards and games area, massage and relaxation, laundry service, and smoked catch to take home. At the end of the trip the team cleans, fillets and vacuum-seals your fish for the flight home.

What to Do on Cedros Island
- Fishing: the reason most people come. Trophy yellowtail on surface iron or live bait, calico bass on swimbaits, and bluefin tuna in season. Toro runs the only live bait barge on the island.
- Wildlife and scenery: the island’s rugged coastline and Biosphere Reserve status make it a beautiful place to be on the water.
- Time off the water: ocean-view evenings, good food, games and relaxation at the lodge. Many groups say it is as much a getaway as a fishing trip.
